AI Beyond Efficiency

I’m excited to share the new “AI Beyond Efficiency” report by the House of Beautiful Business and Hotwire to which I had the pleasure to contribute, alongside my colleagues Martha Schabas and Till Grusche. Inspired by our explorations of “Beautiful AI” in the past year, we argue that brands must move beyond the “efficiency trap” (personalization + optimization) in their use of generative AI, and imagine alternative, more life-centered definitions of value. The “Beyond Efficiency” mindset we propose for brand leaders is based on four qualities and related questions:
AGENCY: How can AI give customers and employees a greater sense of control over themselves and their circumstances?
RECOGNITION: How can AI help customers and employees feel seen and valued for their contributions, thereby making them feel recognized?
⭐IMPACT: How can AI improve customers and employees’ lives in social, ethical, and environmental ways?
INTIMACY: How can brands use AI to foster relationships that are intimate, not just personalized, creating a sense of belonging?
